Why Does My Insurance Estimate Differ From the Shop's Estimate?

Miami, United States - October 16, 2026 / Estes Collision, LLC /

Miami, Oklahoma, October 16, 2026 - More collision repair costs are identified only after work begins. Drivers may be unsure why a body shop's estimate does not match their insurer's figure. Estes Collision, a family-owned collision repair shop in Miami, Oklahoma, is addressing the issue directly for drivers across the region this fall.

The auto collision shop is operating from its expanded Miami facility, providing collision and auto body repairs for drivers across Ottawa County and the surrounding tri-state area. As more insured drivers bring vehicles in for repair, the company says understanding how estimates are built has become a common early question in the claims process.

A Growing Gap Between Initial and Final Estimates

Most insurance companies write their first estimate from photos or a brief visual review, before a vehicle is inspected in person. A repair shop's estimate, by contrast, comes from an in-person teardown that inspects structural components a photo cannot show. Nationally, that gap is well documented. Reports state that CCC Intelligent Solutions’ Q4 2025 Crash Course data shows that only about half of calibrations appear on the initial repair estimate; most are added as supplements once work is underway. It also found calibrations on 28.3% of 2025 repairable estimates, up from 21.8% in 2024, reflecting growing vehicle-tech complexity.

What Current Oklahoma Law Means for Drivers

Oklahoma law gives drivers the right to choose their own repair shop after an accident, regardless of which shop an insurer recommends. Whether a driver can request an independent appraisal for a disputed estimate depends on the terms of that individual's policy, since Oklahoma does not currently require every auto insurance policy to include a standardized appraisal clause. The Oklahoma Insurance Department outlines the general auto claims process for state consumers to reference.

"We hear from drivers who are confused about why their insurance estimate is lower than expected," said Amanda Estes, Co-Owner of Estes Collision. "In almost every case, it is because an estimate by a collision center follows a full teardown, and theirs does not."

Handling the Documentation Directly

The company manages claim documentation and adjuster communication directly for customers, submitting photos and measurements from each teardown to support supplemental requests. It follows OEM-aligned procedures, works with most major insurance carriers, and backs every completed repair with a limited lifetime warranty for as long as the customer owns the vehicle. This approach applies across the company's full-service collision repair work, from panel replacement to frame repair.

"Our goal has always been to be the best collision repair shop in Miami, OK, especially when a claim gets complicated," Estes said. "That means documenting everything so the driver is never stuck between two numbers with no explanation."

Getting a Second Look at an Estimate

Drivers who receive an insurance estimate that seems low can request a line-by-line comparison before authorizing repairs. The same applies to anyone who needs collision repair after a car accident and has not yet chosen a shop. Estes Collision offers free estimates for drivers comparing options at auto collision shops.
